What to know before budgeting

Malaysia is one of the most affordable study destinations for Bangladeshi students. Tuition fees are lower than many European countries, and living costs stay within reach. But the real budget goes beyond tuition, visa, health insurance, accommodation, food and emergency costs all add up.

Every figure in this article is a sample. For current, accurate numbers, talk to a counsellor. Every amount changes with the university, city and your lifestyle.

Tuition fees

Tuition depends on the type of university, the programme and the course length. Public universities are usually cheaper, while international branch campuses and private institutions cost more. The table below gives a general idea.

Level Annual tuition (estimated)
Foundation RM 8,000 – 15,000
Bachelor (Business/IT) RM 15,000 – 25,000
Bachelor (Engineering/Medical) RM 25,000 – 45,000
Master's RM 18,000 – 30,000

Note that many universities charge separate admission, registration or lab fees in the first year. The offer letter lists every fee clearly, read it carefully.

Living costs

Accommodation costs change by city. Staying in central Kuala Lumpur is expensive, while living outside the city or in a smaller town is much cheaper. On-campus dormitories are usually cheaper and safer than rented housing outside.

Cost item Monthly cost (estimated)
Accommodation (dorm/shared) RM 400 – 800
Food RM 400 – 700
Transport RM 100 – 200
Mobile & internet RM 50 – 100
Other RM 150 – 300

All together, budget around RM 1,200 – 1,800 per month to be safe. Cooking for yourself cuts the food cost significantly.

Visa and other fees

The student pass (visa) process also carries costs, application fee, medical check-up, health insurance and immigration fees. These are usually one-time, but keep them in the budget from the start.

Cost item Estimated amount
Visa processing & immigration RM 1,000 – 2,500
Medical check-up RM 250 – 500
Health insurance (annual) RM 500 – 1,000
Flight ticket (one-way) BDT 35,000 – 60,000

First-year total

Adding everything above, the estimated first-year cost is:

  • Tuition: RM 15,000 – 25,000
  • Living (12 months): RM 14,400 – 21,600
  • Visa, insurance & other: RM 1,750 – 4,000

All together, the first year can stay within RM 31,000 – 50,000, roughly BDT 8–13 lakh at current rates. Choosing the city and university carefully can bring this down further.

Ways to cut costs

  • Choose the city: Tuition and rent are both lower outside central Kuala Lumpur.
  • Dormitory: Staying on campus in the first year is safe and affordable.
  • Cook at home: Much cheaper than eating out.
  • Scholarships: Some universities offer merit-based fee waivers.
  • Part-time work: Within visa rules, working a set number of hours can cover pocket money.
